In early 2011, I worked for an IT repairs and sales company, with numerous shops around the Country. Not many shops though, 13 to be exact, as I live in a relatively small Country. I began that job in 2010, and while I enjoyed sales which I excelled at, I much preferred the more technical side. For example, repairs and providing the best solution to a hardware or software requirement.
We also provided Land Registry maps for housing developments and new home builds, which I thought to be a bit odd, but I enjoyed it.
However, as sales dropped across the stores overall, and I was one of the many recent hires within the last 8 month period, I was let go on good terms. I worked my ass off and sold a $1,500 high spec laptop in my first week, even up selling by suggesting a good mouse, mat and back pack.
So you can imagine, I learned so very good sales techniques, which I used to my advantage, especially when it came to applying for jobs. This isn’t where my social engineering came into play just yet, but I began working in a purely hardware repair and set up role, for a company that provided Hardware and Software for retail outlets and petrol stations. I thoroughly enjoyed that, but I was initially hired for another job in the company, which fell through as a contract negotiation with a retail chain didn’t go well. So again, I stared down the barrel of job loss.
I began taking job losses really well. I met my now wife at the time, but personal relationships isn’t the topic of this substack.
